About House No. 17
Governors Island, NY (2015)
Third Rail Projects’ House No. 17, was the second to last developmental phase in the making of The Grand Paradise. During the 2015 Governors Island public season, visitors had several opportunities to join the creative team during open studio and rehearsal times, talk with the artists, and witness the creative process. Members of Third Rail Projects’ Producers Circle received invitations to be among the first audiences to move through this immersive world and get a sneak peek of Third Rail Projects’ next experiential performance work. For House No. 17, Third Rail Projects focused on the characters that inhabited the world, their environments, and the ways in which they would engage with audiences. The new characters and material developed during this residency eventually became part of the fabric of The Grand Paradise, a place of mystery and promise, where visitors follow their own longings and desire into unexpected turns and rewards.

Picnic Tables for Dancing, Bookcases for Naps – Third Rail Troupe Takes Over Governors Island House
"A “family” of six is dancing in sync on the picnic table in the yard. Inside, a man and a woman are lying in fetal positions on the built-in bookshelves; and upstairs, another couple are practicing some moves inside a large closet." "Eventually (though not this summer) the outside performance will meet the inside performance in an overall project called [The Grand Paradise]" - Helen Stapinski
