Directing the Sensory Experience: The Nervous System and Perception
w/ Marissa Neilsen-Pincus

Saturday, February 2nd – 10:00am - 2:00pm
at The Kingsland Ward

In immersive performance our senses are literally immersed in the experience – and the progression by which we perceive, process, and act upon sensory experience is fundamental to understanding how a scene works – both from an audience perspective, and a performer/director perspective. Participants will move through a somatic exploration of the process by which the nervous system perceives experience, and investigate how to use this information as a performer in and/or director of immersive work. We’ll explore how to set up clear expectations and consistent responses and how to listen to and be responsive to each individual audience member.

Immersive Performance Skills: Shaping Time
w/ Rebekah Morin

Saturday, March 2nd – 11:00am - 2:00pm
at The Kingsland Ward

This workshop explores the notion of shaping time similarly to the way we think of shaping space. How do we perceive and measure time? How can we manipulate the sense of time? We'll look at different ways we measure time in performance, by musical beats, clocks, breaths, actions, etc. and how we can change the experience of time for an audience. We'll also play with ways of reconciling different notions of time such as allowing an event to take as long as it needs to, while working within a discrete time frame, like a three minute scene.

Participants will practice building their awareness and comfortability with this simple yet vulnerable and complex aspect of communicating and connecting.
