Libraría at Ace Hotel New York

Libraría at Ace Hotel New York

LIBRARÍA: Stanzas

Libraría: Stanzas, at Ace Hotel New York, is a gallery exhibition that focuses on film, verse, art installation, and augmented reality. The still frames, excerpts, and poetry fragments that comprise the work relay the symbolic layers of the artist's dreams in a catalog that dates back to 1993. Stanzas is part of a larger project called Libraría, which maps individual, colloquial, and collective unconsciousness through the nightly dream cinema and manifests these within “branches” of the library. Branches are interactive art installations and performances in a variety of formats, media, and venues, ranging from ephemeral manifestations, to temporary exhibitions, to forthcoming publications, and a more permanent online collection which will be available as an on-demand series beginning in late summer.

The Exhibition Will Also Feature a Reprise of

LIBRARÍA: THE NIGHT GARDEN

The Night Garden was the pilot iteration of Libraría, created collaboratively by: Daria Karpova (Russia), Anastasia Nesterova (Russia), Tom Pearson (USA), Marissa Nielsen-Pincus (USA), and Renata Zhigulina (Russia) and featuring Marta Luné (UK/Italy) and Maxim Mityashin (Russia). The Night Garden premiered in Saint Petersburg, Russia as part of CEC Artslink's 2018 Arts Prospect Festival and Back Apartment Residency Program.

WHAT TO EXPECT

All films are shot exclusively on iPhone, for display as flip books, still frames, projections, and as a series of hyper-photo images which form a mosaic along the length of a gallery wall. Each hyperphoto is a portal, a dynamic link using augmented reality technology which can be viewed on smart phones via the free LifePrint app. When a visitor opens the app and places their phone over a photo, the photo becomes a moving image – and each moving image, a link in a chain of abstract narrative.

NOTE: Before visiting the gallery, it is highly recommended that you have a reliable mobile/wifi connection and that you download the LifePrint app in advance in order to view the hyperphotos. A fully charged device or outside battery pack is also recommended. The hyper photo component comprises about one-fourth of the exhibit.

About Libraría

The Premier Project of the Global Performance Studio

Renata Zhigulina in Libraría

Renata Zhigulina in Libraría

Libraría is a project that pops up around the world, one that maps the geographical location and colloquial unconscious of participants through their dreams. Each “branch” of the library consists of a blend of digital and analog experiences, stories given by our truest, most original selves in sleep, and assembled through art installation, film, poetry, performance, and an overall experience design that allows audiences to engage directly with the artwork. All films are shot exclusively on smart phones for view on portable devices, in digital displays, as well as within alternative art installation formats. Libraría had its pilot at the 2018 Art Prospect Festival with CEC Artslink in Saint Petersburg, Russia, with subsequent iterations in Liguria, Italy with the Bogliasco Foundation, and in New York City at Ace Hotel. Libraría is the premier project of the Global Performance Studio, Third Rail Projects’ program for international exchange. The project will continue to evolve through a residency program in late 2019 through early 2020 at Olin College of Engineering as part of the Sketch Model Program, for which Tom Pearson is the 2019-2020 Artist-in-Reference.
