House No. 17

“Musings on mortality and heritage, inappropriate revelations…
and dance segments that are touching and deep…
add up to a vague sense of Faulknerian doom, set to good music.” – The New Yorker

House No. 17

Project Description:

Third Rail Projects’ House No. 17, was a four-month creative residency, from June 6th through September 24th, 2014, on Governors Island in New York City. The project was the next step in the development of a new, large-scale immersive theater work by Tom Pearson, Zach Morris, and Jennine Willett, Artistic Directors of Third Rail Projects and creators of the long-running hit Then She Fell. During the island’s public season, visitors had several opportunities to join the creative team during open studio and rehearsal times, talk with the artists, and witness the creative process. Members of Third Rail Projects’ Producers Circle received invitations to be among the first audiences to move through this immersive world and get a sneak peek of Third Rail Projects’ next experiential performance work.

The new work developed during this residency will eventually become a roadside attraction unto itself, a place of mystery and promise, where visitors may have their desires fulfilled, for a price. In the final work, the cast of the touring production Roadside Attraction, Third Rail Projects’ mobile site-specific dance/theater work for six performers and a 1970′s Coleman pop-up camper, will arrive, along with audience members, and encounter the denizens of this other world together. For House No. 17, Third Rail Projects focused on the characters that inhabit this world, their environments, and the ways in which they will engage with an audience.
